Utilization of riverine organic matter by macrobenthic communities in a temperate prodelta

چکیده
Macrobenthos is an important component of organic carbon storage and energy flow in marine systems, including these impacted by riverine discharge high share allochthonous matter (OM). Changing environmental conditions, such as lower precipitation snow cover duration, may affect patterns input, therefore it crucial to know how benthic communities utilize different OM sources areas affected rivers. Using Bayesian stable isotope mixing models, we assessed the diet composition common macroinvertebrates forming transition zone one largest river outlets Baltic Sea region, Vistula River prodelta. Furthermore, analyzed spatial temporal variability biomass-weighted resource utilization those communities. Contribution particulate prodelta decreased with increasing depth. Despite similar distances mouth, relative contribution all studied taxa also depth, which corresponded waters. Nevertheless, due synchronous structural changes communities, feeding modes dominant species, particularly Macoma balthica Hediste diversicolor , biomass often remained highest deepest parts. Our study corroborates that primary consumers act a gateway for into food web illustrates sediment properties partitioning affects structure their abilities OM.

Use of riverine organic matter in plankton
The use of riverine allochthonous organic matter by plankton in the northern Baltic Sea was studied using stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. Dissolved and particulate material was sampled in the main Swedish rivers entering the Bothnian Bay and the Bothnian Sea. At 4 sea stations, dissolved matter, plankton and nekton were sampled in l l size-classes: below 0.7 pm filtrate, 0.7-5, 5-20, 20...

متن کاملFirst Evidence of an Important Organic Matter Trophic Pathway between Temperate Corals and Pelagic Microbial Communities
Mucus, i.e., particulate and dissolved organic matter (POM, DOM) released by corals, acts as an important energy carrier in tropical ecosystems, but little is known on its ecological role in temperate environments. This study assessed POM and DOM production by the temperate coral Cladocora caespitosa under different environmental conditions. The subsequent enzymatic degradation, growth of proka...

[1] Aquatic ecosystems are hotspots of decomposition and sources of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere that are globally significant. Carbon exported from land (allochthonous) also supplements the carbon fixed by photosynthesis in aquatic ecosystems (autochthonous), contributing to the organic matter (OM) that supports aquatic consumers. Although the presence of terrestrial compounds in aquatic O...
